Used in optics (lens, glass…), fluorite is a mineral species of formula CaF2. It is also known under the term fluorine.
The properties of fluorite structure
Composed of calcium fluoride, the fluorite also has trace amounts of organic compounds and trace amounts of silicon, cerium, samarium, europium, oxygen, yttrium, magnesium, chlorine, iron and aluminum. Furthermore, fluorite crystal can present phenomena of thermoluminescence, fluorescence or even triboluminescent.
The properties of fluorite is much better than those of known lenses, it is commonly used in instrumental optics such as the apochromatic optical glasses. Fluorite structure differs notably in terms of refractive transmission and chromatic dispersion.
